Sunrise Movement LA is a group of everyday Angelenos working to build power for climate justice in the Greater Los Angeles Area. By 2028, we aim to organize a mass, youth-led movement across race, class, and age, building unbreakable solidarity in neighborhoods and schools across the Los Angeles region, capable of engaging in strategic, sustained, noncooperation in order to win a People’s Green New Deal for LA.

Los Angeles faces many different threats in a changing climate. What's more, its history as a hub of dispossession, displacement, and extraction has shaped it into a region that is uniquely limited in its ability to respond to those threats in equitable and community-centered ways. Despite this, Los Angeles is home to vibrant traditions of struggle, each lending a voice to the effort to imagine new ways to thrive, building new worlds of collective care, and creating new visions of resilience.

As a part of those traditions of struggle, Sunrise Movement LA is building power in local neighborhoods, starting with those most affected by the crises of disinvestment and environmental harm. In Watts, we are organizing high school students and community members to transform a major polluting site in the neighborhood into remediated, community-controlled land that could serve community needs. Across the Los Angeles oil field, the largest urban oil field in the US, we are organizing residents to fight for their right to live in safe and healthy homes unburdened by pollution from fossil fuel production.

There are so many more neighborhoods we need to organize to build meaningful power to achieve a Green New Deal for Los Angeles. But to do that, we need resources. We need to feed canvassers after long days in the field, fund community spaces for gatherings where our members can strengthen their relationships with each other as organizers for a common cause, and support those amongst us for whom money is a barrier to the continued investment of their time into the transformation of their own lived realities. We need money for everything from bail funds to butcher block paper. You can be a part of our movement to transform Los Angeles into a lush, livable, liberated place.
